Mission Design is characterized by straight, thick, horizontal and vertical lines and flat panels. The most common material used in Mission furniture is oak. Hardware is often visible on the outside of the pieces and made of black iron. It is a style that became popular in the early 20th century. In following years, designers begin to blend the orginal Mission style with Arts and Crafts.
The Arts and Crafts
movement is an American domestic style popular from the last years of the 19th century through the early years of the 20th century. The style incorporated locally handcrafted wood, glass, and metal work that is both simple and elegant. A reaction to the increasingly common mass-produced elements, the style incorporated clean lines, repeating designs, vertical and elongated forms, and natural materials.
In order to express the beauty inherent in craft, some products were deliberately left slightly unfinished, resulting in a certain rustic and robust effect.
